US: Flash Flood Hits Durham, NC Days After Tropical Depression Chantal

Several parts of North Carolina experienced severe flash flooding on Wednesday, July 9, as a strong line of thunderstorms moved into the region, just days after Tropical Depression Chantal brought intense flooding to Chapel Hill. The Durham Fire Department responded to multiple calls as a result of flooding across the city and surrounding areas, including rescue operation.

Kyokusui-no-en, or feast on a winding stream, was performed by nobles who had to compose a Japanese poem and write it down on a strip of paper before floating cups of sake reached them, or else they had to drink the sake as a penalty.

A garden

The low stone lantern indicates that this is the compound of Yasukuni Shinto Shrine at Kudan. The torii in the centre is the wooden Otorii (Great Gate) built in 1873. It fell into ruin, was removed in 1884, and was replaced with a bronze gate in 1887. There is a flagpole to the left of the gate. The fenced-in area in the foreground seems to be a pond. Rokuharamitsuji Temple

The Karamon Gate of Rokuson-o Shinto Shrine is seen facing east from the northeastern side of the Shinryu Pond. This shrine was rebuilt by Nankokushonin of Henjoshinin with the help of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1702 and completed in 1707. It enshrines Rokuson-o (Minamoto Tsunemoto, a descendent of the Genji clan. A teahouse at Oji

The teahouses of Oji were located along the approach to Oji Inari Shrine. Oji Inari is the head Inari shrine in the eight provinces of the Kanto region and enshrines the Inari Daimyojin deity. It is said that foxes from all over Kanto gather here on New Year's Eve and that they are transformed into court ladies at nearby Shozoku Inari and then visit this shrine. During the Edo and Meiji Periods, it was popular to go hiking from the Ueno hills to the Mt. Dokan and Mt. Asuka. A teahouse at Oji

Oji was a considerable distance from Edo, but Mt. Asuka and the Takinogawa River gained fame for their cherry blossoms and autumn colours, respectively, and Oji Inari Shrine attracted more and more worshippers. Consequently, many teahouses and restaurants were built along the 450 m approach to the shrine at the foot of Mt. Asuka. The Toshogu in Ueno is famous at present for its peony garden, but since this was built in 1980, it was not there at the time the photo was taken. To the right is the Yomei Gate, and the left is the kamijinko (treasure storage of a shrine). The kamijinko is built in Azekura style (store house built of square logs) , inlaid with carvings of a white and black elephant based on a draft by Kano Tanyu at the end of the eaves.
